My previous post took us back to the Garden Wall one morning last summer to experience the wildflowers along the Highline Trail out from Logan Pass.  On that same day in the afternoon, just across the Going-to-the-Sun Road and up behind the Logan Pass Visitor Center, we revisited another favorite trail, the one and a half mile climb to the Hidden Lake overlook.  We’ve done that trail in slippery, snowy conditions and in summer heat, but that day it was cool and cloudy, and although I couldn’t really hear them, I could sense a giddy delight arising from the surrounding meadows dotted with wildflowers.  Ralph Waldo Emerson was right: “the earth laughs in flowers.”

We made it to the overlook and had started back down before the clouds let loose.  The rain didn’t seem to bother the mountain goats that always frequent the area, and it didn’t bother us because we had packed our ponchos.  As lots of other hikers dashed by us, running to get out of the rain, we took our time getting back down to our car.  We were so lucky to be in Glacier at the same time the wildflowers were visiting, and so lucky to be able to linger in their midst.
